The deceased, Zahir Fakir (45), was also a joint convener of the Araihazar Upazila Jubo Dal. He was the son of Abdur Rahman from the Kalapaharia area.
According to family sources, although Zahir Fakir’s ancestral home was in Araihazar, he had been living in a rented house in the Munshiganj Sadar area for about 15 years. He also owned a pharmacy in the Char Kishorganj area of Sonargaon.
Police and local sources report that on Wednesday (October 21) around 10:00 PM, while Zahir Fakir was returning home after closing his shop in the Char Kishorganj area of Sonargaon, miscreants attacked him with sharp *chapati* (machetes), hacking him repeatedly before leaving him on the road. Local residents later rescued him and took him to a hospital in Munshiganj, where the attending physician declared him dead.
The incident has cast a pall of grief over the victim’s family and relatives. The murder has also sparked sorrow and outrage among local political activists and residents.
OC of Sonargaon Police Station, A. Barik (PPM), stated that the names of the accused cannot be disclosed at this time, as doing so might hinder efforts to apprehend them. However, the police are actively working to arrest the suspects.
