Chittagong University ( CU) will hold its 5th convocation on Wednesday (May 14). Students and faculty are brimming with excitement for the upcoming event, which will formally award degrees to graduates. The university administration has completed all preparations for the convocation.
At a press conference held on Monday at the S. Rahman Hall of Chattogram Press Club, Vice-Chancellor Mohammad Yahiya Akhtar shared the detailed plans for the ceremony.
Around 23,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students are expected to participate in the convocation, where Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus will receive the honorary D.Litt Degree as the Chief Adviser. Seating arrangements are being made for approximately 25,000 people, including students, faculty, and guests.
The primary focus of the convocation is the awarding of certificates. Certificates, complete with signatures from the Vice-Chancellor and the Controller of Examinations, are fully prepared, and departments and institutes are getting ready to distribute them. Officials and staff in the examination control office are working tirelessly, day and night, to ensure everything runs smoothly.
Meals for the participants will be delivered to the respective departments and institutes by 10 a.m. on May 14, and graduates must collect their meals between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m.
To ease transportation challenges, the proctorial body, in collaboration with law enforcement, has arranged 100 large buses, which will operate from various city points from 6 a.m. Participants can also use designated shuttle trains to reach the campus. No private cars, taxis, or general vehicles will be allowed through Gate 1, but shuttle buses will be available from there to the main campus.
Regarding security, the university's proctorial body is closely coordinating with various government intelligence agencies. Steps have been taken as per their requirements. Though some have reacted negatively to receiving phone calls from these agencies, the university clarified that this is a routine security measure and not a cause for concern. Graduates can attend the event without issue if they hold a valid convocation card, unless specifically restricted by law enforcement.
Convocation cards are non-transferable and must be presented to receive gowns and caps. Graduates must collect their entry (ID) cards from their respective departments or designated booths between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. on May 14. Security personnel will strictly enforce this requirement, and no one will be allowed entry without an ID card. Gown collection is also available on Monday (May 12) and Tuesday (May 13) during office hours (9 a.m. to 3 p.m.), with additional distribution starting at 7 a.m. on May 14.
Personal vehicles will not be allowed past the main Gate 1 (Hathazari Road) to the campus. Buses will be provided from Gate 1 for the convenience of graduates.
To ensure students can follow the event, the convocation will be live-streamed, with LED screens set up at four points around the campus.
During the convocation, 42 Ph.D. and 33 M.Phil. degrees will be awarded, alongside a total of 22,586 undergraduate and postgraduate degrees across various faculties, including Arts and Humanities (4,988), Science (2,766), Business Administration (4,563), Social Sciences (4,158), Life Sciences (1,685), Engineering (796), Law (703), Education (317), Marine Science (284), and Medicine (2,296).
Notable guests will include Education Advisor Professor Dr. Chowdhury Rafiq-ul-Abarar, Liberation War Affairs Advisor Faruk I Azam (Bir Pratik), Power and Mineral Resources Advisor Muhammad Fawzul Kabir Khan, Health and Family Welfare Advisor Noor Jahan Begum, and UGC Chairman Professor Dr. S.M.A. Faiz.
