Bricks will be banned in govt projects: Rizwana

Staff Correspondent

Environment adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan on Friday said the interim government would stop using bricks in government construction projects by 2025 for reducing the administration’s carbon footprint.

Government offices have already been notified of the ban through letters, the adviser told BSS in an interview noting the public sector accounts for most brick consumption in the country.

The government is resolved to retire nearly all the brick kilns across the country for protecting the environment and bolstering fight against climate change. Since, about 3,491 illegal brick kilns will be ordered shut for not having environmental clearance, Rizwana told reporters.

The government has decided to not permit any new brick kiln, relocate all the illegally set up kilns in different districts, and shut down any kiln blamed for polluting the environment.

However, the government would incentivise concrete block or block brick production as these are durable, recyclability and longevity. Officials would also avoid steps against zigzag brick kilns as they are attracting increasing private investment for being significantly more energy efficient than traditional kilns.

The government has asked owners of zigzag brick kilns to follow laws and regulations in production activities, warning them that otherwise their sites would also be shut down, Rizwana added.
