BNP leader Mizanur secures bail in Joy murder plot case

A Dhaka court has granted bail to BNP leader Mizanur Rahman Bhuiyan in a case related to the alleged attempt to abduct and murder Sajeeb Wazed Joy, the son of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in the United States in 2015.

The decision came after Mizanur surrendered before the court and pleaded for bail on the condition of filing an appeal. Dhaka Additional Metropolitan Magistrate Md Mahbubul Haque passed the order.

On August 17, 2023, the court of Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Asaduzzaman Nur convicted Mizanur, along with four others, in connection with the case.

The convicted individuals, including veteran journalist Shafik Rehman, Daily Amar Desh Editor Mahmudur Rahman, Mizanur Rahman Bhuiyan Milton (an expat businessman living in the US), Jatiyatabadi Samajik Sangskritik Sangstha (Jasas) Vice-President Mohammad Ullah Mamun, and his son Rizvi Ahmed Caesar, were sentenced to seven years in prison.

The Ministry of Home Affairs stayed Mizanur's sentence for a year on September 22, 2023.

The case, initially filed on August 3, 2015, by Paltan Police Station, involves the alleged plot to abduct and murder Joy in the US. A charge sheet was filed by the police on February 19, 2018, naming five individuals as defendants.

Over the course of the trial, 12 witnesses, including Sajeeb Wazed Joy, provided testimony in the case.
