BNP Confce turns bloody in Morelganj: 30 Injured, two cases filed
Md. Nazmul, Morelganj (Bagerhat)
A long-awaited BNP conference in Putikhali Union of Morelganj, Bagerhat, ended in violence after clashes erupted between two rival factions on Sunday.
The event, scheduled after 17 years, was disrupted by repeated clashes between supporters of president candidates Khalilur Rahman Shikdar and Abdus Sattar Hawlader, leaving at least 30 activists injured.
The violence broke out during a speech by former Chhatra Dal leader Abdul Halim Khokon. Despite police presence, the situation escalated, prompting intervention by the army. The conference was later suspended.
Both sides blamed each other. Khalilur claimed a conspiracy to remove his supporters from the voter list, while Abdus Sattar accused the other group of a planned attack.
On Monday, both factions filed separate cases: Khalilur named 27 individuals including youth leader Ali Azim Babul, while Shahidul Islam’s case included Khalilur and 27 others.
Police confirmed ongoing operations to apprehend those involved, though no arrests have been made yet. The incident has left the local BNP leadership and activists disheartened, with uncertainty looming over future organizational unity.
