Bangladeshis spend $5bn annually on medical care abroad: BB governor
Staff Correspondent
The central bank Governor Ahsan H Mansur said Bangladeshis spend over $5 billion each year on medical treatment overseas, with India and Thailand being the top destinations due to their advanced healthcare systems.
The Governor made the comments while speaking at a workshop titled "Cross-Border Data Flow: A Bangladesh Perspective," jointly organised by the Policy Research Institute of Bangladesh and the World Bank.
The event was held at Amari Dhaka in the capital’s Gulshan 2 on Sunday.
In his address, Mansur noted that a significant portion of this expenditure occurs unofficially, intensifying pressure on the country’s balance of payments.
To mitigate this, he emphasised the need for a legal framework for data processing to facilitate efficient sharing of data both locally and internationally.
