Police have claimed to have solved the murder of five-year-old Abd ur Rahman Tasin in Ashulia’s Bhadaile area, saying the child was killed out of personal resentment against his father.

The accused, Md Saiful Islam, 27, allegedly confessed to the killing in a statement recorded under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure before a court, police said.

Dhaka District Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime, Operations and Traffic-North) Md Jahangir Alam disclosed the information at a press briefing at Ashulia Police Station on Wednesday.

According to police, Saiful was taken on remand twice for one day each. He initially denied involvement but later admitted to the crime during the second phase of interrogation. He subsequently gave a confessional statement before the court.

Police said no one other than Saiful was involved in the killing.

Tasin went missing on August 19 after leaving his rented home in the Bhadaile Bazar Chowrasta area to play. Around 6:30pm, police recovered his body inside a white plastic sack from the rooftop of the third floor of the same building.

The child’s mouth and neck were wrapped with red tape, while rice and polythene were reportedly found inside his mouth.

Tasin’s father, Shahid Mia, filed a murder case with Ashulia Police Station on August 20.

During the investigation, police detained Saiful, a resident of the same building, on suspicion. A search of his residence allegedly led to the recovery of a red shopping bag, pieces of elastic, scattered rice and a roll of Scotch tape, which police said were linked to the killing.
