Bangabandhu: A national icon beyond partisan lines

Bangabandhu: A national icon beyond partisan lines

Sajjad Hossain Sabuj

As March 17 returns, the Bengali nation marks the 106th birth anniversary of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman—the architect of independent Bangladesh and a towering figure for oppressed people worldwide. Born in 1920 in the noble Muslim family of Tungipara, Gopalganj, his life remains synonymous with the struggle for self-determination and justice.
This year’s anniversary is observed under a starkly different political climate. Following the fall of the Awami League government on August 5, 2024—an event the author characterizes as a "meticulous design" or conspiracy—the interim government led by Dr. Muhammad Yunus took office. One of the interim administration's subsequent moves was the cancellation of the official observance of March 17 as "National Children’s Day," a tradition held since 2009.Since the change in power, the country has faced significant turmoil. Many Awami League leaders have faced imprisonment or violence, while symbols of the liberation war—including the historic residence at Dhanmondi 32 and various sculptures of Bangabandhu—have been targeted or destroyed.Despite the hostile political environment and the ban on certain political activities, the author argues that Bangabandhu’s place in the hearts of millions remains unshaken. Social media platforms like Facebook have become a virtual sanctuary for tributes, flooded with photos and analytical posts honoring his contributions. This digital outpouring mirrors the resilience seen after 1975, when his name was suppressed from state media for 21 years, yet his legacy survived through the people.Bangabandhu’s political journey began in 1940, leading him through the Language Movement of 1952, the Six-Point Movement of 1966, and the mass uprising of 1969. His leadership culminated in the 1970 general election victory and the historic March 7 speech—now recognized by UNESCO as part of the Memory of the World Register.

Beyond being a partisan leader, his accolades reflect a global stature:
Juliot-Curie Peace Prize: Awarded for his contribution to world peace and democracy.Greatest Bengali of All Time by a BBC poll. The author concludes that history cannot be erased by political shifts or administrative decrees. Just as the efforts to suppress Bangabandhu’s name between 1975 and 1996 ultimately failed, the current attempts to diminish his national importance are seen as temporary.Sheikh Mujibur Rahman belongs to no single political entity; he is the foundational pillar of the Bengali national identity, whose contributions to independence and the rights of the common man transcend party lines.
