The 51st martyrdom anniversary of the architect of independent Bangladesh, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was observed across the country on Saturday (August 15) with solemn prayers and quiet remembrance.

On the dark night of August 15, 1975, a group of disgruntled army officers assassinated Bangabandhu along with most of his family members at his historic Dhanmondi 32 residence in Dhaka. The martyrs of that tragic night included his wife Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib, sons Sheikh Kamal, Sheikh Jamal, and 10-year-old Sheikh Russel, alongside several close relatives.
Following political transformations in August 2024, the interim government cancelled the national day of mourning status and public holiday previously observed on August 15. Consequently, the day was conducted as an ordinary working day across government offices, educational institutions, and commercial establishments without official state ceremonies.
In the absence of state-sponsored events, members of the public, various socio-cultural groups, and well-wishers observed the anniversary through personal tributes, religious offerings, and special prayers (doa mahfil) organized at mosques and places of worship seeking eternal peace for the departed souls.

Law enforcement agencies maintained strict vigil and deployed additional security personnel around the Dhanmondi 32 area and sensitive city checkpoints to prevent any untoward incidents.

Historians and citizens noted that despite shifts in state protocols, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's monumental leadership in leading the nation to freedom in 1971 and the tragedy of August 15 continue to hold an enduring place in the national memory.
