The Vatican announced on Monday that Pope Francis has passed away at the age of 88.

In a video message, the Vatican confirmed that "At 7:35 AM today, Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the embrace of the Father. His entire life was devoted to serving the Lord and His Church."

The statement continued, "He showed us how to live the values of the Gospel with unwavering faith, courage, and universal love, especially for the poorest and most marginalized. With deep gratitude for his exemplary life as a devoted disciple of Jesus Christ, we commend his soul to the boundless mercy and love of God."

Pope Francis, the 266th leader of the Catholic Church, served as pope for over ten years after his election on March 13, 2013.

Having undergone the removal of part of a lung during his youth, the pope faced a series of health challenges in recent years. His papacy began after the unexpected resignation of his predecessor, Benedict XVI.

Pope Francis was also known for his outspoken stance against the Israeli bombings in Gaza.
