World No Tobacco Day celebrated with various events in Gazipur

The World No Tobacco Day was celebrated in Gazipur with the participation of people from different walks of life at the initiative of the district administration. A colourful procession, essay competition and discussion meeting were held to mark the day.
Keeping in mind the theme of this year's day, 'Exposing the tricks of tobacco companies, building a tobacco and nicotine-free Bangladesh', a colorful procession was taken out in front of the historic Bhawal Rajbari in the district administration premises on Saturday morning.
The procession circled the main roads of the city with the spontaneous participation of representatives of various government and private organizations, educational institutions and civil society. Later, a discussion meeting was held in the Bhawal Conference Room of the Deputy Commissioner's Office.
The discussion meeting was presided over by the learned Additional District Magistrate (ADM) of Gazipur, Salma Khatun. The discussion meeting was addressed by Rafiqul Isram of the Department of Agricultural Extension, Aman Ullah Darji of the Department of Youth Development, Police Representative Md. Shawkat Kabir, Belal Hossain of NATB and leaders of various organizations and institutions.
Participating in the discussion meeting, the speakers called for strengthening anti-tobacco awareness activities at all levels, including schools and colleges, to protect the future generation. At the same time, they demanded strict enforcement of laws against tobacco sellers and users, especially increasing the rate of fines and imprisonment.
On the occasion of the day, the district administration organized an essay competition on “Effects and Remedies of Tobacco”. Students from various high schools of the district participated in it. The three winners of the competition; Fabliha, Taznin Islam and Sidratul Muntaha Iti were given financial prizes and certificates.
