Witness in war crimes case against S.Q. Chy detained by BNP activists in Ramu

Nurul Absar (76), a freedom fighter who testified in the war crimes case against the late BNP Standing Committee member and former minister Salauddin Quader Chowdhury — who was convicted and executed during a previous government — has been detained by BNP activists in Ramu, Cox’s Bazar.He was apprehended early Thursday morning from the residence of one Abdul Goni Majhi in the West Para area of Kauarkhop Union in Ramu upazila.The Officer-in-Charge of Ramu Police Station, Iman Kanti Chowdhury, confirmed the detention.Nurul Absar is a resident of Chandanpura village in Rangunia upazila of Chattogram and the son of the late Kazi Md. Jaber.Local residents claimed that Nurul Absar had been in hiding at the aforementioned house in Ramu since August 5 of last year.Shabbir Hossain Badsha, convener of the Kauarkhop Union unit of Jubo Dal (BNP’s youth wing), said that upon learning about Absar’s whereabouts, local people surrounded the house under the leadership of BNP leaders Enamul Haque and Hanif Jihadi. Later, a team from Ramu Police Station arrived and took him into custody.He is currently being held at Ramu Police Station, authorities confirmed. Investigations are underway to determine whether there are any cases filed against him at Rangunia Police Station.OC Iman Kanti Chowdhury stated that appropriate legal action will be taken based on the outcome of the investigation.
