A weeklong tree plantation campaign and tree fair-2026 got underway in Barguna on Monday with a call from the administration to expand green cover and build resilience against climate change.

Jointly organized by the district administration and the Forest Department, the fair was inaugurated at 10:00 AM with the slogan "Let us adorn the country with tree plantation, Bangladesh comes first." The weeklong event, scheduled to run until August 2, kicked off with a colorful rally through the town, followed by a discussion meeting on the Central Shaheed Minar premises.

Presiding over the inauguration, Barguna Deputy Commissioner Ms. Taslima Akter emphasized that massive tree plantation is vital for coastal districts to counter natural disasters and climate vulnerabilities. "A tree is a life. Planting trees alone is not enough; we must also ensure their proper care and nurturing," she said, urging citizens to embrace the spirit of the campaign to build a greener district.

Member of Parliament for Barguna-2 and Chief Whip of the National Parliament Md. Nurul Islam Moni joined the opening ceremony virtually as the chief guest.

The event was attended by Barguna-1 MP Md. Oliullah, District Council Administrator and District BNP Convener Md. Nazrul Islam Molla, and Additional District Commissioner (General) Animesh Biswas as special guests. Additional attendees included Assistant Superintendent of Police Tanmoy Biswas, Divisional Forest Officer of the Coastal Forest Department (Patuakhali) Md. Zahidur Rahman, Barguna Press Club President Md. Hafizur Rahman, and local political and business representatives. The program was moderated by Tariq Bin Ansari Suman.

Speakers at the event underscored the critical role of afforestation in maintaining ecological balance and securing a habitable environment for future generations. They noted that ongoing environmental conservation initiatives, including canal re-excavation, must be paired with intensified tree-planting drives and regular maintenance.

The fair features numerous stalls showcasing a diverse selection of fruit-bearing, timber, and medicinal saplings, drawing enthusiastic participation from locals, students, and nursery owners.
