Extortion for construction work at Nitol Motors in Chhatak alleged

Chhatak ( Sunamganj) Correspondent

There have been allegations of obstruction and extortion of construction work by Nitol Motors Ltd. in the Chhatak Shyamoli area of Sunamganj.

On September 9, Md. Ala Uddin, son of the late Abdul Jalil of Bashakhala village in Chhatak municipality, filed a written complaint with the Sunamganj Superintendent of Police regarding the incident.

According to the complaint, the tender for a boundary work of Nitol Motors was won by the cousin of Abdul Baki Muhith, son of the deceased Ang Muktadir of Baghbari village in the municipal town, and Abdul Baki Muhith was in charge of her caretaker. The complaint states that on September 7, at around 10 am, 10-12 youths including Ifti Islam, a designated leader of the local Chhatra League and a fugitive accused in a sabotage case, and Sohel Ahmed, along with local weapons, obstructed the construction work and threatened to kill them. At that time, they said that they would not be allowed to start the work unless a ransom was paid. The complaint also mentions that they were even threatened to kill and hide the body. Due to this, the complainants are currently suffering from insecurity.

Earlier, it is learnt that Abdul Baki Muhith had filed a complaint with Chhatak Police Station in this regard. He said that some miscreants who have damaged the name of BNP by tarnishing its image are trying to dominate the Awami League. There are several cases against them, including theft, robbery and other cases.

Complainant Ala Uddin said, "I am suffering from insecurity. So I have complained to the Superintendent of Police for the safety of life and property. I demand a fair trial."

Jalil, Khaled, Milan and Jalal Mia, who were named as witnesses in the incident, said that the truth of the incident will be found if an investigation is conducted and they are ready to give testimony.

However, Rashid Mia denied the allegations of extortion. He said, they have received the work of 400 feet of the company's boundary. In this, the villagers have blocked it because many of the villagers have occupied private land and tree plantations. Ifti has received the work of 1,400 feet of boundary in another part of the same work, which is still ongoing. The four of us are partners in this work. Basically, the dispute arose over the work.

He further said that a written complaint has been filed with the Upazila Nirbahi Officer in this regard. At the same time, he demanded an impartial investigation.
