Zakir Azad, Cumilla

The normal life of Cumilla has been disrupted by two consecutive days of rain. Daily laborers, street vendors, rickshaw pullers, students and working people, as well as traders sitting on the sidewalks along the roads, have suffered due to the incessant rain, sometimes light and sometimes heavy. Meanwhile, in the district city, knee-deep water has been recorded in some places, and roads have been submerged in others.

According to the Cumilla Meteorological Office, 60.4 mm of rainfall has been recorded in Cumilla in the last 24 hours. The District Meteorological Office said that this trend of rainfall is likely to continue Wednesday and  Thursday.

It was seen on the spot that due to continuous rain, water has accumulated on various roads and alleys of Cumilla city. As a result, many roads have become unusable. People have been seen suffering in traffic. However, the hardest hit are the working class. Especially rickshaw pullers and daily wage workers. School and college students and office-going people are also suffering. CNG-powered autorickshaw, rickshaw and battery-powered autorickshaw drivers in Cumilla city have taken advantage of the inclement weather of continuous rain. Passengers and city residents have complained that the drivers of this public transport are charging extra fares beyond the specified fare.

Meanwhile, water has accumulated in potholes and ditches, creating misery. Water has accumulated knee-deep in the road from Kandirpar to Nazrul Avenue on Ranir Bazar Road in Cumilla city, from the Chamber of Commerce of Cumilla city to Ashoktala via Chhayabitan. In addition, water has accumulated regularly on several other roads in the city, including the EPZ road from Tomcham Bridge in Cumilla , causing potholes and ditches.

Various parts of the roads have become dangerous due to water accumulating in the potholes. Videos of rickshaws and autorickshaws carrying passengers overturning at various times have been circulated on social media. Hundreds of people are suffering every day while traveling on these unusable roads.
Factory workers of Cumilla EPZ, Anju, kabir and Abu Nasir  said that their bodies are aching while traveling on the road from Tomcham Bridge to EPZ. They are forced to travel on the road. There have been incidents of autorickshaws overturning on this road at various times. They are demanding that the road be repaired by creating a way to quickly drain water.

Meanwhile, an autorickshaw driver named Tanvir Islam said that when the monsoon season comes, the work on drains and roads in this city really starts. Proof of this is the Nazrul Avenue area of the city. A situation has been created that makes it difficult to breathe while traveling on the area from Karbhaban to Kandirpar.

The City Corporation has created a field of suffering by creating a drainage path.
Regarding the rainfall forecast, Cumilla Meteorological Department Officer-in-Charge Syed Arifur Rahman said that 60.4 millimetres of rainfall has been recorded in the last 24 hours till 6 pm on Tuesday. The level of heavy rainfall was high during most of the continuous rainfall. This rainfall will continue for the next two to three days.
