11 fishermen were detained with illegal nets and boat in joint Coast Guard–Fisheries Department Drive at Haimchar, Chandpur
Coast Guard Media Officer Lieutenant Commander Siam-ul-Haq on Monday informed that the Bangladesh Coast Guard, in collaboration with the Department of Fisheries, conducted a successful operation in Haimchar, Chandpur, detaining 11 fishermen and seizing illegal current nets and a motorized wooden boat.
The press release stated that under the “Fish Protection and Conservation Act, 1950”, catching, transporting, storing, marketing, or buying and selling Hilsa is strictly prohibited nationwide for 22 days—from October 4 to October 25, 2025—during its prime breeding season. To ensure the effective implementation of the mother Hilsa conservation program, the Coast Guard has strengthened intelligence surveillance and is conducting round-the-clock river and coastal patrols.
As part of this initiative, on Sunday at 6:00 PM, a joint operation was carried out by Coast Guard Outpost Noya-ani and the Department of Fisheries in the areas of Lamchhori, Katakhali Launch Terminal, Baro Tahbil, and adjacent river zones under Haimchar Police Station.
During the operation, authorities seized
about 2,000 meters of illegal current nets worth Tk 70,000 and one motorized wooden boat, arresting 11 fishermen.
Among them, three minors (under 18 years) were released on bond in the presence of an Executive Magistrate. The confiscated nets were destroyed under supervision of the Senior Upazila Fisheries Officer and the Executive Magistrate, while the boat was handed over to the Haimchar Upazila Fisheries Office. The remaining eight detainees were transferred to Haimchar Police Station for legal proceedings.
The press release further added that the Coast Guard will continue such operations in the future to protect the country’s valuable fish resources.
