Tulip Siddiq appointed as UK’s city minister

Staff Correspondent

The newly formed UK government is set to appoint Tulip Siddiq, a granddaughter of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, as the city minister for regulating the country’s flagship financial services industry.

Though the appointment has not been made public yet, British media made the disclosure citing reliable sources.

Labour party candidate Tulip was reelected at Hampstead and Highgate constituency on 4 July national elections. She has held the seat since her first entry to the British Parliament in 2015.

The name of her new role would be Economic Secretary to the Treasury. Tulip, also the daughter of Sheikh Rehana and niece of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, is one of the four elected women lawmakers from the Bangladeshi diaspora in the UK.
