Some quarters continue to threaten journos: Editors’ Council
Staff Correspondent
The Editors’ Council issued a statement on Tuesday noting that threats to the freedom of journalism continue to be issued from some quarters of the society despite the fall of fascist Awami League government three months ago.
The statement, signed by Council President Mahfuz Anam and General Secretary Dewan Hanif Mahmud, said one of the pledges of the July-August anti-fascist movement was to ensure media freedom.
However, despite repeated assurances from the interim government in this regard, some groups have threatened to attack and besiege some media offices.
The law enforcers responded promptly to the calls from media authorities for beefing up security, the statement noted.
The Editors’ Council asked for stringent actions to prevent incidents of future mob actions.
It also asked aggrieved parties to voice their concerns through writing and speeches, instead of resorting to violence, which merely repeats the practice of ousted fascists.
