Security tightened ahead of Friday prayers amid unrest

Staff Correspondent

Law enforcement agencies stepped up security measures ahead of Jummah prayers on Friday amid fears of possible unrest.

Sources in law enforcement said that there was a concern that some might engage in demonstrations and sabotage activities across the country, including in Dhaka, after the prayers. They had information that some agitators might gather in mosque areas on the pretest of attending prayers. Therefore, as a precaution, strict security measures had been ordered around mosques nationwide, they noted.

Meanwhile, Dhaka Metropolitan Police sources said additional police deployment had been directed around Baitul Mukarram National Mosque and major mosques across Dhaka during Friday prayers. Besides plainclothes detectives are also working to maintain the security of people.

Following widespread violence during the Quota Reform Movement, the home ministry issued a curfew which is relaxed for nine hours in Dhaka and three other districts on Friday and Saturday.
But law enforcers are seen deployed in key points of the city.

On July 18, the quota reform movement, organized under the banner of Students Against Discrimination, saw violence.

Over the next two days, nationwide protests and violence claimed over 200 lives and injured thousands.
