Road turns death trap : Brahmanpara-Burichong upazila residents facing troubles

Zakir Azad, Cumilla

The Brahmanpara-Cumilla Major Gani road has become impassable due to non-renovation for a long time.

Hundreds of thousands of people travel to the district headquarters through the road every day for various needs. This is the main and important road for the people of two upazilas Burichong and Brahmanpara.

The people of these two upazilas have to constantly travel through the road at the risk of their lives.

On the spot it is seen that almost every place of the 21- km road is pitched, bricks have come out and small holes have been formed.

In addition, due to this year's terrible floods, many parts of the road were completely destroyed and traffic was stopped. Later attempts were made to make it passable by leaving bricks, concrete, sand and earth. Even if there is traffic on the road, you have to go slowly to the destination.

Regional auto rickshaws ply daily on the road along with CNG, buses, trucks and various private vehicles. In this, the vehicles overturned in small potholes and people are suffering from accidents almost every day. As a result, they have to suffer from traffic congestion. This 21 km road from Brahmanpara used to take 35 to 40 minutes but now it takes more than double.

The road is like a death trap, from Burichong to Palpara Bridge, the pitch and surki have disappeared almost everywhere. Brahmanpara to Tatara has become a death trap due to large craters. If this continues, after a few days this road will no longer be suitable for traffic.

There are about 28 to 30 speed breakers on this 21 km road. Due to which the vehicle has to move at a snail's pace. As a result, these speed breakers and vangachura on the road have recently been robbed.

CNG driver Mizanur Rahman said, I have been driving CNG on this road for 15 years and I have never seen such a bad condition of the road. Earlier I used to travel from Brahmanpara to Cumilla in 35 to 40 minutes, now it takes about one and a half hours. Apart from this, there is a fear of being robbed at night due to some kind of accident every day due to breakdowns on the road.

Abu Zafar a teacher of Sidlai College, who regularly commutes to work on this road, said that because the road has been badly damaged by the recent floods, vehicles have to move very slowly. As a result, passengers take a lot of time to travel. Besides, those who go to office from Cumilla to Burichong and Brahmanpara have to leave one to one and a half hours before the earlier time for the purpose of office. He also said that if the road is not repaired very quickly, traffic will stop on this road after a few days.

Md. Adnan Ibn Hasan, Deputy Divisional Engineer of Roads and Township Department, said that after the flood, this road has become impassable.

In this regard, Brahmanpara Upazila Nirbahi Officer Sam Azaharul Islam said, "I myself face a lot of trouble in using this road for official, administrative and law and order purposes." I made several requests to the road and highways department for long-term renovation of the road for about 10 months

They said that there was not enough allocation in the financial year. In this financial year, they will start the long-term renovation work of this road. There is no alternative to taking the good will and timely initiative of the Roads and Highways Department in this regard.
