Pruning started to increase tea production

AKM Jaber, Kulaura (Moulvibazar)

With the onset of the winter season, the work of pruning has started in the tea gardens.

This pruning method is used to produce more tea leaves in the next season, as a result the leaf production process will be stopped for the next two to three months.

It is learnt that at this time of the year the production of tea leaves is reduced due to flowering of tea plants. To increase the production, the other branches are pruned leaving one or two branches of the tea tree.

According to Bangladesh Tea Research Institute (BTRI), pruning is the cutting of unnecessary branches to enhance the value of tea plants.

Due to pruning, the tea tree grows many branches. As a result, fresh and vibrant leaves are more available in the new season. Not all tea gardens are pruned at the same time. Pruning is done only in sections that require pruning.

In some tea plantations of Kulaura Upazila, it is seen on the surface, all the other branches are being cut to a certain extent, keeping one or two branches of the tea tree. Pruning trees are painted white. Trees pruned in the next rainy season will grow branches. At the same time, the production of tea leaves will also increase.
Talking to a worker working at this time, it is known that pruning is necessary in the garden during the winter season.

Even though the tree is cut down due to pruning, the plant is not harmed but the production of tea leaves increases. Due to the pruning of the tea tree, the tree grows a lot of branches. He said that the production is better due to the increase in branches
