A man was killed and 15 were injured in a series of crashes involving 10 vehicles, including passenger buses, due to dense fog on Dhaka-Mawa Expressway in Srinagar area of Munshiganj on early Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Forhad, 40, while the identity of the injured could not be confirmed immediately.
Forhad was brought dead at the hospital, Srinagar Health Complex doctor Camellia Sarker confirmed.
The incident occurred in Shologhar area around 6:00am of the expressway, where vehicles were traveling from Dhaka towards Mawa. Initial reports indicate that dense fog led to a loss of control, causing a series of collisions. The chain reaction began with a collision between two cargo trucks, followed by a bus rear-ending another bus around 7:30am, leading to several injuries. Later, a pickup van collided with a private car, causing further harm.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdul Quader Jilani of Hasara Highway Police Station stated that the dense fog likely contributed to the accidents, and excessive speed under such conditions may have been a factor.
Highway police and fire service teams promptly arrived at the scene to conduct rescue operations and clear the damaged vehicles to restore normal traffic flow.
The injured have been shifted to the upazila health complex for treatment, witnesses said.
