A male student at Jahangirnagar University has been accused of physically torturing and verbally abusing a female student.

The accused, Chandan Somaddar alias Soam Himaddri, is a master’s student of the government and politics department. He is currently serving as the general secretary of the auditorium-based cultural body, the Jahangirnagar Theatre.

The victim filed a complaint with the university proctor on Sunday.

According to the complaint, the victim had a relationship with the accused and cut it a year ago. During that period, she had been brutally tortured several times for various pretexts.

Quoting the complaint, the severity of the torture was so much that she had gone to the doctor for treatment due to a burst eardrum and a broken finger.

In December 2022, one of his peers complained on their behalf, but Himadri instigated and later compelled her to withdraw the complaint from the proctor's office.

At a phase in May last year, the accused proposed to the victim to convert her religion with the promise of marriage. But the victim declined the proposal.

“As Himadri was an organizer of Jahangirnagar Theatre (auditorium faction), the victim complained several times to the top brass organizers of the theater, but they made him general secretary in the following committee instead of taking action against him,” she alleged.

“The accused strangled and slapped me several times. He also threatened me not to file any complaint with the proctor,” she said.

When contacted, the accused, Himadri, refused to comment until the university administration formally served any notice.

"After receiving the complaint, I assigned two assistant proctors, Ikhtiyar Uddin Bhuiyan and Prokriti Biswas, to investigate the matter and prepare a report in this regard," JU proctor Mohammad Alamgir Kabir stated, confirming the complaint received.
