Police have recovered the hanging body of Sabrina Rahman Shammi, a female student of Jagannath University (JnU), from a women’s hostel in Tanuganj Lane, near Katherpool in Old Dhaka. Initial observations suggest it to be a case of suicide.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sutrapur Police Station, Md. Saiful Islam, confirmed the incident. Shammi was a student of the 2021-22 academic session in the Department of Sociology at JnU. Her hometown is Narayanpur in the Chowgacha upazila of Jashore district. Her father’s name is Lipton.

OC Saiful Islam said, “Sabrina Rahman Shammi, a student of Jagannath University (JnU), lived in a women’s hostel in Tanuganj Lane near Katherpool. She stayed alone in a room, while other students stayed in adjacent rooms. Her hanging body was discovered around 4:30 a.m. today. The body has been sent to the capital’s Mitford Medical College Hospital for an autopsy.”

Speaking about the incident, the university’s Proctor, Professor Dr. Muhammad Tazammol Hoque, said, “I rushed to Sutrapur Police Station at 5:00 a.m. as soon as I heard about the incident. Initially, I learned that she had a romantic relationship with a BUET student. To uncover the actual cause of the suicide and ensure justice if any individual is responsible, the police have sent the body for an autopsy. After the post-mortem, the body will be taken to her village home in Jashore as soon as possible.”
