Staff Correspondent

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) recorded a temperature of 43.8 degrees Celsius in Jashore today, marking the highest recorded temperature after 1972.

On 18 May 1972, Rajshahi experienced 45.1 degrees Celsius, the highest recorded temperature after independence.

Today's second-highest temperature was recorded at 43.7 degrees Celsius in Chuadanga at 3:00 pm, according to the BMD.

An oppressive heatwave has been sweeping across many regions of the country since the beginning of this month, breaking the previous record for the longest prevailing heatwave in the country since 1948.

Public life has become unbearable due to the severe heat. Some people have reportedly died from heat-related diseases in different areas of the country.

At least 11 people have died in the last eight days in the hospitals, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Meanwhile, media reports suggested that heatstroke has killed more than 50 people since the ongoing heatwave started on March 31.

In this circumstance, all schools and colleges have been closed till May 2.
