The Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) results of two major government colleges in Bandarban — Bandarban Govt  College and Bandarban Govt Women’s College — have shown a sharp decline, causing serious concern in the district’s education sector. Pass rates at both colleges have fallen by almost half compared to last year.

According to Eeducation bmBoard, Bandarban Govt College recorded a pass rate of only 29.62% this year, down from 55.02% in 2024. The situation at Bandarban Government Women’s College is even more alarming, with a pass rate of 26.80%, compared to 76% last year.

Results were particularly poor in the Science and Commerce streams, with many students failing multiple subjects. The Humanities stream also performed below expectations.

Teachers cited irregular class attendance, decreased interest in studies, and exam anxiety as key factors behind the poor performance. On the other hand, parents blamed teacher negligence, insufficient classes, and weak academic supervision

Principal Prof  M. Nurul Absar Chowdhury of Bandarban Govt College said the college faced a severe teacher shortage. Additionally, students from remote areas often attended class only once or twice a week, which impacted their performance in the HSC exams. 

Prof. Dr. Royazul Haque, Principal of  Govt  Women’s College, explained that many students admitted there had weak prior academic records from SSC results. The remote, hilly location and limited awareness among students and parents, along with teacher shortages, also contributed to the low pass rate. 

Local education experts warned that the poor results at these two colleges could have a negative impact on the overall education environment in Bandarban.
