Govt can't speak on St Martin's issue for its reliance on foreign powers: Fakhrul

Staff Correspondent

The government can't speak on St Martin's issue due to its reliance on foreign powers, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said.

Terming St Martin's issue as a "threat to the sovereignty" of Bangladesh, he said country's sovereignty is now under attack. People are being killed in firing from Myanmar, but the government is not saying anything else. "This weak and subservient government has cling to power depending on foreign countries. Because of it, the government can't utter a single word. The government should resign on St Martin's Island issue."

He was talking to journalists at an opinion-sharing meeting at his house at Thakurgaon district on Sunday (June 16) afternoon.

Criticising the government, Mirza Fakhrul said the country's sovereignty has become a trifle issue to the present unelected occupying government. "We can's travel through a recognized sea route between the two countries. Myanmar has stopped the movement of our people through firing on them. But,, the government has not yet make any contact with the Myanmar government. They even could not hold talks with Myanmar on this issue."

Thakurgaon District BNP general secretary Mirza Faisal Amin, Municipal BNP president Abdul Hamid, and leaders of the BNP's sister organisations were present at the press conference.
