Staff Correspondent

The police arrested former member of parliament (MP) Syed Sayedul Haque, also known as Barrister Suman, in Dhaka early Tuesday.

He was apprehended from his sister’s house at Mirpur-6 around 1:30am.

Confirming the matter, Pallabi police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Nazrul Islam said, “Acting on a tip-off, Mirpur police conducted a raid and arrested the ex-MP. But, he has been kept in custody at Pallabi police station.”

As the lock-up of Mirpur model police station was damaged during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, Barrister Suman was taken to Pallabi police station, the OC added.

He has been shown arrested in a case filed over the killing of a student during the protest.

Before his arrest, Suman wrote on his verified Facebook account, “I am going with the police. See you in court. Pray for me, everyone.”

In a video message, posted on his Facebook page, the former MP also claimed that he was in Dhaka and did not go anywhere after 5 August. For security reasons, he remained out of public sight.

Suman was elected MP as an independent candidate from Habiganj-4 in the general election on 7 January.
