Cold wave forecast from Friday as winter sets in

Staff Correspondent

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has forecast a temperature drop, with cold waves expected in parts of Bangladesh in the second week of the Bengali month of Poush, mid-December.

"The temperature will gradually decrease. From Friday, a few places will experience isolated cold waves," Meteorologist Afroza Sultana told bdnews24.com on Monday.

She said the cold wave is expected to intensify in early January.

The long-term forecast for December predicts one to two mild or moderate cold waves in the western and northern regions of the country.

A cold wave is defined as a temperature drop where the minimum temperature falls below 6 degrees Celsius across a large area.

A temperature range between 6-8 degrees Celcius is considered a moderate cold wave, while a range of 8-10 degrees Celsius is classified as a mild cold wave.

MERCURY DIPS IN SREEMANGAL

As of 6am Monday, Sreemangal recorded the country's lowest temperature at 10.4°C over the past 24 hours.

In contrast, Sitakunda in Chattogram reported the highest temperature at 30.5°C during the same period.

The regular weather bulletin indicates that night temperatures may slightly decrease nationwide in the next 24 hours, while daytime temperatures are likely to remain unchanged.

Light to moderate fog is likely in some areas from midnight to morning.

A low-pressure system formed in the Bay of Bengal on Monday night evolved into a well-marked low before intensifying into a depression by Friday evening.

However, it has since weakened back into a low-pressure area.

Afroza said this system may cause rainfall in southern parts of the country on Tuesday or Wednesday.
