The current spell of the scorching heatwave that has been sweeping over the country for more than two weeks may prevail till the end of the current month, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).

The Met office, meanwhile, predicts another heatwave could hit the country in the next month.

Shahnaj Sultana, a meteorologist of the BMD, told the Daily Sun that another heatwave may come few days after the end of the ongoing spell.

The districts of Rajshahi, Pabna, Khulna, Bagerhat, Jashore and Patuakhali experienced a severe heatwave on Tuesday, while a mild to moderate heatwave was sweeping over Dhaka, Rangpur and Mymensingh divisions and rest parts of Rajshahi, Khluna and Barishal divisions and the districts of Moulvibazar, Rangamati, Chandpur, Bandarban, as per the BMD report.

The temperature in Dhaka increased to 38.6 degrees Celsius on Tuesday against 37.8 degrees Celsius a day before.

The country’s highest temperature was recorded at 40.5 degrees Celsius in Ishwardi of Pabna on Tuesday.

To get rid of the oppressive heatwave people in different parts including Khulna, Kushtia and Chuadanga offered special prayers seeking rains.

Meanwhile, a 56-year-old man died from heatstroke amid sweltering temperatures in Dhaka’s Gulistan on Tuesday.

Wari Police Sub Inspector (SI) Shah Alam said one Alamgir Shikder collapsed on the road due to a heatstroke after alighting from a bus around 11am on the day.

He was taken to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where the duty doctors declared him dead, he said.

The very severe heatwave makes life miserable in the city and elsewhere in the country, forcing people to stay indoors during the daytime.

Public health experts suggest people avoiding sunny places and using sunglasses, umbrellas and caps while going out of homes at the daytime amid extreme heat.
