Boro paddy harvesting festival in Cumilla brings smiles to farmers
Zakir Azad,Cumilla
The Boro paddy harvesting festival has begun in Cumilla.
Farmers are spending a busy time harvesting paddy and bringing home the harvest. The golden paddy has brought smiles to their faces. However, this year, the Gomti and Saldanadi rivers burst their banks and flooded Brahmanpara, Burichang, Chauddagram, and Debidwar upazilas. As a result, farmers are all lost. After this, the farmers of Comilla are facing adversities.
Agriculture experts say that farmers are becoming interested in cultivating high-yielding varieties of paddy. As a result, it is possible to cultivate three crops on the same land. This will benefit the farmers financially.
In the meantime, early Boro rice is now blooming in almost all the lands of various unions in the upazila of Cumilla . The fields are filled with the scent of golden rice.
Since the weather has been favorable in Cumilla since the flood, the Boro yield has been quite good in those lands. However, the flood has deposited silt in the fallow lands in various upazilas, making the lands fertile. As a result, there has been a good yield of Boro rice this year. Farmers are worried about the fair price of rice in the Cumilla market.
It has been decided to cultivate Boro rice on 1 lakh 61 thousand 790 hectares of land in the current Boro season in Cumilla. And more than the target has been achieved.
Hossain Ali, a farmer of Subil Elka of Subil Union of Debidwar Upazila, said that Boro rice cultivation takes less time. This year, the land was fertile due to the flood and there was less attack of insects and spiders, so there is no need to spray pesticides. As a result, the yield has been good. If the weather is favorable, we will be able to bring the rice home in good condition.
Faruk Mia, another farmer from Pompara village of Sidlai union in Brahmanpara upazila, said that this year there was no problem with irrigation in planting Boro paddy due to the floods. The floods and rains made it easier to plant paddy, and since the weather is favorable from other years, we will benefit from Boro cultivation.
Cumilla Agriculture Extension Department Deputy Director (DD) Ayub Mahmud said that this year, the Gomti and Saldanadi rivers have broken, and Boro paddy cultivation has been quite good in some upazilas including Burichang, Brahmanpara, Debidwar, Nangal Kot and Ardash Sadar.
Above all, Cumilla has had a bumper harvest of Boro paddy this year. So far, 07 per cent of Boro paddy has been harvested in various upazilas. The weather is favorable, I hope it will be completed in a few days.
