Attackers set a car on fire at the house of BNP leader Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury in the Mehedibagh area of Chattogram city on Saturday night. Photo: Rabin Chowdhury

The residences of BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury and three other leaders were vandalised in Chattogram on Saturday night.

Several vehicles which were parked at the residences were also vandalised and set on fire.

BNP leaders blamed the Awami League’s student wing Chhatra League, and youth wing Jubo League for the attacks on the houses.

All these incidents took place between 8pm and 9pm, hours after the residences of Education Minister Mohibul Hassan Chowdhoury and Chattogram City Corporation Mayor Rezaul Karim Chowdhury, and the office of lawmaker Md Mohiuddin Bachchu came under attack in the port city.

Apart from Amir Khasru, houses of BNP Vice-Chairman Mir Mohammad Nasir Uddin, Chattogram city unit former convener Shahadat Hossain, and incumbent convener Ershad Ullah were attacked.

Shahadat said activists of Chhatra League and Jubo League carried out an attack on his house in a building located on Badsha Mia Road in the city. They vandalised various things at the house.

The attackers torched ten to twelve vehicles parked inside the building, said Shahadat, who was not at home during the incident.

Around 9pm, Amir Khasru’s residence came under attack in the Mehedibagh area.

Amir Humayun Mahmud Chowdhury, younger brother of the BNP leader, said, “My brother is in jail now. Though he is not involved in anything, Jubo League and Chhatra League men attacked our house, carried out vandalism and torched a vehicle.”

Chawkbazar police station Officer-in-Charge Wali Uddin Akbar said they heard the news of setting fire to the vehicle in front of Amir Khasru’s house. Meanwhile, the police went to the spot.
