Bangladesh named 'Country of the Year' by The Economist

News Desk

The Economist has declared Bangladesh the "Country of the Year" for 2024, recognizing the student-led street protests that led to the overthrow of an autocratic regime.

In an announcement on its website, the prestigious London-based magazine hailed Bangladesh for its significant political shift, saying, “Our winner is Bangladesh, which also overthrew an autocrat.”

The magazine highlighted how, in August 2024, widespread protests forced out Sheikh Hasina, who had ruled Bangladesh for 15 years. Hasina’s reign was marked by election rigging, repression, and violence against protesters.

The protests were spearheaded by students, and a temporary technocratic government, led by Nobel laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus, has since restored stability and improved the economy.

While the country faces challenges, including repairing ties with India and organizing fair elections in 2025, The Economist lauded Bangladesh’s progress towards a more liberal government, making it their standout nation for the year.
