Bangladesh Can Secure Climate Justice at COP29

Raoman Smita

Bangladesh faces a critical moment at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, where securing climate justice is both a challenge and a priority. As one of the countries most vulnerable to climate change impacts, Bangladesh has been disproportionately affected by rising sea levels, extreme weather events, and health crises like dengue—issues exacerbated by global warming. At this climate conference, Bangladesh’s goals likely include advocating for increased climate finance, pushing for binding commitments on emission reductions, and ensuring support for adaptation and resilience-building in vulnerable nations.

The big question is whether Bangladesh can secure commitments that go beyond promises. To achieve meaningful climate justice, the country must rally support from other climate-vulnerable nations and leverage its position to push for a fair allocation of climate funds and stricter accountability from major polluting nations. Success at COP29 would mean real progress toward sustainable development and climate resilience for Bangladesh and similar countries facing the brunt of climate change.

As global leaders convene at COP29, the United Nations climate summit, Bangladesh steps forward to address pressing issues of climate finance, sustainable development, and resilience. Known as one of the countries most impacted by climate change, Bangladesh faces rising seas, unpredictable storms, and increased flooding, all of which threaten lives and livelihoods. For Bangladesh, COP29 offers a unique chance to advocate for fair, effective global solutions that can provide the resources needed to protect its people and promote long-term environmental goals.

A major focus for Bangladesh is securing access to the Loss and Damage Fund, created to support communities facing extreme climate impacts. Ensuring this fund is accessible to countries like Bangladesh means vulnerable communities can receive timely aid to recover and rebuild. Access to these resources could make a real difference, from rebuilding homes after severe flooding to safeguarding coastal areas against the encroaching sea.

Bangladesh also aims to increase access to international climate finance to help develop a greener economy. Many small businesses and entrepreneurs in the country are eager to adopt environmentally friendly practices but need support to make this transition. With more climate funding, Bangladesh could expand green job opportunities, increase renewable energy sources, and foster eco-friendly practices across its economy, strengthening both environmental sustainability and financial security.

Investing in youth empowerment is another key priority for Bangladesh. With a growing number of young people already engaged in climate action, the country is preparing the next generation of leaders who will inherit the long-term effects of today’s climate decisions. At COP29, Bangladesh is likely to push for increased global investment in youth-focused programs, recognizing that today’s youth leaders are essential to shaping a sustainable future.

Data and research are also at the core of Bangladesh’s approach to climate action. Using data-driven insights, the nation can identify its most at-risk areas and create targeted strategies for adaptation. Reliable data can support Bangladesh’s case for climate assistance, focusing on policies that address proven needs. By advocating for greater support in this area, Bangladesh hopes to ensure that even countries with limited resources have access to the data and tools they need for effective climate resilience planning.

At COP29, Bangladesh’s participation goes beyond advocacy; it’s a chance to build partnerships, secure resources, and call for fairness in global climate policy. As Bangladesh champions climate finance, green development, and youth empowerment, it seeks not only to protect its people but also to inspire united action. With its push for justice and equitable support, Bangladesh’s role at COP29 underscores the need for urgent, inclusive solutions to the growing climate crisis.
