Acting Chairman of Barni Union arrested in police vehicle vandalism case in Tungipara

Police  arrested Samad Munshi, member of Ward 5 of Barni Union Parishad, vice-president of the local Awami League, and acting chairman of the union, in connection with a case involving the vandalism of a police vehicle in Tungipara upazila of Gopalganj.

He was detained on Wednesday at around 2 PM while leaving the Upazila Parishad premises. The operation was conducted under the directive of Officer-in-Charge (OC) Khandaker Khorshed Alam, led by Sub-Inspector Monir Hossain and Assistant Sub-Inspector Khalekuzzaman.

According to police, Samad Munshi is a named accused in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act (Case No: Tungi-2) related to the vandalism of a police vehicle on the night of February 2, 2025, in front of Khan Sahib Sheikh Mosharraf Hossain High School in Tungipara. The case included 105 named individuals and 450 unidentified ones.

OC Khorshed Alam said, the accused will be produced before the Gopalganj court and sent to jail through legal procedures.”

The arrest has sparked considerable commotion in the area. While some suspect political motives behind the arrest, the administration has asserted that “we do not look at party affiliation—only at the crime itself.”
