90 bags sugar and 2 cars seized in Sylhet

Sylhet Bureau

Goainghat police station seized 2 DI vehicles with 90 sacks of contraband sugar smuggled from India at Goainghat in Sylhet on early Saturday.

Two cars loaded with sugar were seized from Guchchgram point of East Jaflong of Goainghat upazila in a joint operation by the army and police. However, police could not arrest anyone involved including the driver of the car.

It is learnt that due to the political instability of the country, due to the lack of activity of the law and order forces, India is illegally bringing cattle, buffalo, sugar, drugs and other Indian goods through the Goainghat border to Dedars through the zero point of Bangladesh. Local smugglers of the respective areas were active in these smuggling operations. A few months ago, even though there were some raids, the smugglers were carrying out these smuggling operations under the authority of the police. Since the fall of the Awami League government on August 5, the smugglers were somewhat inactive as the army was on the ground. But slowly the smuggling syndicate is on the rise again.

Acting OC of Goainghat police station Shah Harunur Rashid said that the case has been registered under regular law. Due to the ongoing crisis in the country and the absence of police, there has been some disruption of law and order, and smugglers are taking this opportunity. Now slowly the law and order situation is improving. All will be fine with time. And our thana police operation will continue in the coming days.
