74 GDs, two cases filed over phone theft at Azhari's waz mahfil in Sylhet; 10 detained

At least 74 general diaries (GDs) and two cases have been filed over alleged mobile phone theft at Islamic scholar Mizanur Rahman Azhari's waz mahfil at MC College grounds in Sylhet city.

Sylhet Metropolitan Additional Deputy Commissioner (Media) Mohammad Saiful Islam Confirming the matter and said 10 people have been detained so far in connection with the theft.

Among the detainees, six are men and four are women.Many more people are coming to the Shahparan Police Station to file GDs, the police official said.

An organisation named Anjumane Khedmate Quran organised a three-day waz mahfil at the MC College grounds on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Azhari delivered the closing speech on the last day (Saturday).

Attendees reported that Azhari had to conclude his speech earlier than scheduled due to disruptions caused by a section of the audience. He also expressed his frustration over the chaos through the mahfil microphone.

According to the organisers, mobile phone thefts occurred on all three days of the mahfil. However, the number of thefts increased significantly on the last day due to the large crowd during Azhari's speech.

The organisers said more than a hundred people complained about mobile phone theft on the last day.

Police said some people have also complained about gold jewellery theft in their GDs.

Alleging mobile theft, a person named Lutfur Rahman wrote on Facebook, "My Samsung Galaxy A-34 handset was stolen while I was going to Maulana Mizanur Rahman Azhari's waz."

Earlier this month, hundreds of attendees at Azhari's waz mahfil in Jashore reported thefts of mobile phones, gold jewelleries and other valuables, prompting over 350 general diary (GD) filings with the city's Kotwali Model Police Station.

17th death anniv of Allama Fultali (R.A.), Isa-e-Sawab Mahfil on Wednesday

Wednesday, January 15, 2025, marks the 17th death anniversary of the renowned scholar of the subcontinent, Shamsul Ulama Hazrat Allama Abdul Latif Chowdhury Fultali (R.A).
On this occasion, a grand Isale Sawab Mahfil will be held at Balai Haor adjacent to Fultali Sahebbari in Zakiganj. The Mahfil will begin at 10:30 am with a visit to the tomb of Allama Fultali Saheb Qiblah (R.A).

After that, the main program will begin with Khatme Quran and Dua. The various programs include Khatme Bukhari, Khatme Khajegan, Khatme Dalailul Khairat Sharif, Zikr Mahfil, thematic speeches and commemorative discussions. The Mahfil will be taught by the worthy successor of Allama Fultali Saheb Qiblah (R.), Ustadzul Ulama Wal Muhaddiseen, Murshid-e-Barhak Hazrat Allama Imad Uddin Chowdhury Baro Saheb Qiblah Fultali. All preparations for the Mahfil have already been completed. Renowned Pir-Mashaykhs, Alim-Ulamas, Islamic educationists, thinkers and political leaders will be present at the Mahfil.

Hazrat Allama Fultali (R.A.) is a well-known great personality in the subcontinent. He was born in 1913 in the secluded village of Fultali in Zakiganj Upazila. He passed away on January 15, 2008 after spending almost a century of his life. In this long life, he rendered versatile services to the religion. His contribution in the field of Ilm-e-Qiraat is unique and world-famous. He has a glorious history of a quarter of a century in the service of Ilm-e-Hadith. He has served the helpless and distressed people of the society in many ways. He has called people to the path of Allah throughout his life in various ways. He was also a good writer and social reformer. In addition to the services of Ilm-e-Qiraat and Ilm-e-Hadith, he played a special role in the field of Tazkiya-e-Nafs or Ilm-e-Tasawwuf. Countless people have taken oath of allegiance to him and have moved forward on the path of attaining Allah. He has made lifelong efforts to purify the souls of people through preaching, teaching dhikr, Khanka mahfil, etc. He has also established many mosques and madrasas in the country and abroad to spread Islamic education.
Balai Haor is ready to welcome lakhs of Muslim people on the occasion of Isale Sawab Mahfil. Ten large-scale fields have been prepared for car parking on both the north and south sides of Ratanganj Bazar on Zakiganj-Atgram Road. Arrangements have also been made to park motorcycles on the road from Ratanganj Bazar to Sahebbari. Volunteers have been prepared for overall discipline. Their training and distribution of responsibilities have already been completed. Law and order and security measures have been strengthened with the cooperation of the administration. The Isale Sawab Mahfil Implementation Committee has sought the overall cooperation of the Muslim people from all walks of life to make the Mahfil successful and worthwhile.

Osmani used rare items handover at Sylhet Museum

Iqbal Hossain Chowdhury, a UK-based expatriate community leader and relative of Osmani, has handed over rare items used by General Ataul Gani Osmani, the commander-in-chief of the Liberation War, to the Sylhet Osmani Museum.

Items used by General Osmani were handed over to the Osmani Museum near Dhopadighi in the city at 11 am on Sunday.
At this time, expatriate community organizer Iqbal Hossain Chowdhury handed over Ottoman items to Md. Aminul Islam, the keeper of the Ottoman Museum.
Present at the handover were Major General M Azizur Rahman Bir Uttam, former president of KUMUSAS Harunuzzaman Chowdhury, former dean of Shabiprabi Kamal Ahmed Chowdhury, prominent journalist, Ottoman researcher Muhammad Faizur Rahman, and freedom fighter MA Malek Khan.

Among the 52 items handed over is Bangabir Osmani's death certificate issued by a hospital in the UK in 1984.
