30 pc mangoes wasted every year due to lack of storage

Rajshahi Correspondent

Mango production is increasing every year in Rajshahi. These mangoes are sold in different parts of the country after supply according to demand. Similarly exported abroad. However, 30 percent of mangoes are wasted every year due to lack of storage. Apart from this, due to lack of good prices, mangoes are wasted due to the negligence of farmers and traders. As a result, 70 percent of the total production of mangoes is good.

Experts say that mangoes will not spoil if properly stored. Farmers and traders will not lose if the mangoes are not spoiled. On the other hand, farmers and traders can sell the mangoes in reserve at a good price at the convenient time. By doing this they will benefit financially. Not only that, mangoes are also available after the season.

It is known that garden mango ripens very close after maturity depending on the variety. In this, all the farmers and traders dropped the garden mangoes. If the mangoes appear ripe on the tree, they fall and perish. So forced to take mango down. It can be seen that many people have come to market with mangoes for sale. As a result, our imports in the market increased. Due to this, the price of mangoes falls. If you wait in hope of higher price, mangoes are spoiled during transportation and not planted at the right time.

According to the sources of Rajshahi Agricultural Extension Directorate, 17 thousand 943 metric tons of mangoes were cultivated in the season 2020-21. Mango production is 2 lakh 14 thousand 483 metric tons. In the season 2021-22, 2 lakh 6 thousand 156 metric tons were produced on 18 thousand 515 hectares of land. In the current season (2022-23), mango is being cultivated on a total of 19,578 hectares of land in Rajshahi. This year the potential production is estimated at 2 lakh 58 thousand 450 metric tons.

Mango farmer Moni Mia said that when the sun and heat are high, the mango ripens quickly. By doing this, mangoes have to be harvested and sold in a quick time. If there was a system of storage of mangoes, they could have been sold at a good price on time. As more mangoes are produced in Rajshahi. The demand for these mangoes is also in the outer districts. If there is a system to store mangoes in this area, we would get a good price by selling them at convenient times.

Mango trader Abdus Salam said that when the mango ripens in the garden, everything ripens within a few days. As a result, one variety of mango ripens and another variety of mango ripens. Then it has to be sold. The problem is that there is a lot of mango supply in the market. As a result, the price decreases. However, due to lack of storage, mangoes are spoiled. But the price of mango is low in the beginning but it is high in the end.

Rajshahi fruit research center chief scientific officer Dr. Md. Shafiqul Islam said, before the mango ripens, some are destroyed by storms. And after ripening of the mango, something is lost. Usually 30% of mangoes are wasted due to lack of storage after ripening. Among them, mangoes are wasted due to lack of good prices, negligence of farmers and traders. Many mangoes would have been saved from spoilage if there was a system of preservation.
