Procession demanding resignation of Chairman in Osmaninagar

Osmaninagar (Sylhet) Correspondent

Sadipur Union office was in a frenzy during the whole day in a pro-opposition rally demanding the resignation of Awami League leader Saheed Ahmed Musa, Chairman of Sadipur Union Parishad of Osmaninagar Upazila in Sylhet.

The students of the local Anti-discrimination Student Movement organized a demonstration in front of the UP office on Thursday (November 7) at around 10 am demanding his resignation.

Around 11 o'clock, a procession of students on behalf of the chairman came in front of the office. Meanwhile, tension spread on both sides. On hearing the news, local BNP leader Shah Ehiya along with party leaders came to the spot and tried to bring the situation under control.

Then both sides clashed. At one point, BNP leaders and local media workers mediated the understanding between the two sides and they left the place with a procession.

Osmaninagar Assistant Commissioner (Lands) Shahnaz Parveen told Sadipur UP Secretary Maruti Nandan Dham in the presence of local media workers around 1:00 p.m. that UP Chairman Shaheed Ahmed Musa will not hold office until the matter is resolved. Osmanigar Police Station OC Monayem Miah and OC Arafat Jahan Chowdhury were also present at the time.

Meanwhile, Osmaninagar police station OC Monayem Miah confirmed that a team of Sylhet DB police from Goalabazar arrested Chairman Shaheed Ahmed Musa and took him to Sylhet. On the other hand, the activists of the local anti-discrimination movement have submitted a written application to the Upazila Nirbahi Officer on his behalf to dismiss UP Chorman and not to dismiss the chairman. Incidentally, around 5 pm on August 4, a local student crowd protested at Sherpur Gol Chattar demanding Sheikh Hasina's resignation. Then the leaders of Awami League and organ organizations attacked the protestors and injured many, including student leader Juman Qureshi.

The students claimed that they were attacked under the leadership of Awami League leader Chairman Saheed Ahmed Musa. They also claimed that after the attack, Awami League leaders closed the Sherpur Bridge and searched the protesters. Then they crossed the Kushiara river by boat instead of going through the bridge and came home.

After the fall of the Awami League government on August 5, Chairman Musa took leave and went to the UK giving UP member Samsul Islam Shamim in charge. Workers of the local anti-discrimination movement have been marching every day since November 4 to demand his resignation after he recently returned to the country and took over as chairman.
