NBR to set up electronic fiscal devices in all jewellery shops
Staff Correspondent
According to an NBR letter issued on Sunday, EFDs will be installed in jewellery shops located in Dhaka, Narayanganj, Narsingdi, Munshiganj, Manikganj, Savar, Gazipur, Mymensingh, Netrakona, Kishoreganj, Sherpur, Tangail, Jamalpur, Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Bandarban, Khagrachari, and Rangamati districts.
A meeting was held on 7 January between the tax authority and the Bangladesh Jeweller’s Association (BAJUS) to discuss the EFD implementation. The NBR has requested BAJUS to provide a list of all jewellery establishments in these regions. If a complete list is not possible, the association has been asked to submit partial data.
During the meeting, BAJUS leaders raised several concerns regarding challenges in the jewellery industry, including issues related to Value Added Tax (VAT), baggage rules, and gold imports. The NBR noted that many businesses in the sector remain unregistered under VAT services. It emphasised that registering unregistered businesses, installing EFDs, and addressing these challenges in a fair and practical manner would increase government revenue and contribute to the growth of the jewellery sector.
The NBR has sought BAJUS’s cooperation, and association leaders have assured their full support. An online awareness meeting via Zoom is scheduled for 23 January at 3pm. Following this, Genex Infosys PLC will begin field-level EFD installations.
The NBR has also requested a list of jewellery establishments under the jurisdiction of the Dhaka (East/West/North/South) and Chattogram Commissionerates, as stated in the letter.
