National polls a must by 2025: Jamaat

Staff Correspondent

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has mounted pressure on the interim government to finish the necessary reforms, paving the way for holding the next general election by 2025.

Jamaat’s Nayed-e-Ameer Syed Abdullah Muhammad Taher placed the demand while addressing a programme in Chauddagram area of Cumilla on Saturday.

“We, the countrymen, want to regain our voting rights. We hope that the interim government will arrange the parliamentary election by 2025 realising the people’s expectations,” he said.

“Historical evidence shows that once a fascist regime flees, it can never return,” he said, adding that former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will never be able to return to the soil of the country.

Jamaat wants to see a peaceful and prosperous country with the coexistence of people irrespective of religious faiths, he said, “We will not be involved in any unjust and repressive activities if we are voted to power in the next general election.”

Claiming that there is widespread propaganda against Jamaat that the country’s women will be denied rights if the party is voted to power, he said that the women will be given the highest honours if the party comes to power with people’s votes.

He termed the youths as the main driving force and said his party will stand beside them by creating employment opportunities if it becomes able to reach the goal.

However, Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman while addressing a programme in Keraniganj area of Dhaka on Friday, said that they are not desperate to gain power; instead, they seek reforms in key state institutions.
