National Local Government Day-2025 was celebrated in Gopalganj with the theme “Local Government in Public Service, Commitment of Youth to Build a Country”.

On this occasion, on Tuesday at 10 am, a colourful procession led by Biswajit Kumar Pal, Deputy Director of Local Government Department, started from the office of the Deputy Commissioner and ended in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner.

Later, at 11 am, the discussion meeting held in the conference room "Swachchhata" of the Deputy Commissioner's Office was presided over by Deputy Director (Deputy Secretary) of the Local Government Department, Bishwajit Kumar Pal.

On the occasion of National Local Government Day, Gopalganj Zilla Parishad Chief Executive Officer Amit Debnath, Gopalganj LGED Executive Engineer Md. Ehsanul Haque, Gopalganj Public Health Engineering Department Executive Engineer Md. Fayez Ahmed, Gopalganj Municipality Secretary A.H.M. Rakibul Islam spoke at the time.

Local Government Day is an important day, which is usually observed to increase public awareness of the importance, activities and contribution of local government. It is observed at different times in different countries of the world including Bangladesh, but the goals and objectives are almost the same.

The goal of Local Government Day is to ensure good governance - good governance is established by making local government transparent, accountable and participatory. Improvement of public service - making local government more effective and efficient to deliver services to the doorstep of the people

Accelerating local development - Encouraging local governments to play a significant role in education, health, infrastructure, water and sanitation, agriculture and economic development. Enhancing public participation - Encouraging people to participate in various decision-making processes of local governments, so that their needs and opinions are reflected in the activities.

The purpose of Local Government Day is to raise awareness about the importance of local government - To convince people that an effective local government structure is the basis for sustainable development. Social and economic development - Ensuring economic progress at the local level through small enterprises, women entrepreneurship development, agricultural expansion and support for small businesses. Disaster management and environmental protection - Strengthening the role of local governments in combating natural disasters, reducing the impact of climate change and ensuring sustainable environmental management. Strengthening local leadership - Improving the skills of elected representatives, improving the quality of leadership and awakening their sense of responsibility towards the people.

Mehedi Hasan, Personal Assistant to the Municipal Administrator Mahfuzur Rahman Lablu, Assistant Engineers of the District LGED Md.
