Jahangirnagar University students on Monday protested the reinstatement of quota system in all tiers of government jobs.
The protesters gathered around 11:30 am at the central Shaheed Minar premises of the university. Later, they brought out a protest procession from the place which ended the Dhaka-Aricha highway adjacent to the main gate of the university through a five-minute long symbolic road blockade.
They were chanting different slogans during the procession like ‘Bangabandhur Banglay Boisommer Thai Nai, Ekattorer Banglay Boisommer Thai Nai, Quota Prothar Kobor De.’
They press home their four point demands – the reinstate the law of 2018 abolishing the quotas in government jobs, constitute a commission regarding all types of government jobs recruitment by canceling the irrational and discriminatory quotas, the quotas only considerable for the unprivileged and lack behind people, and the vacant post must be fulfilled on the basis of merit if there won’t be any qualified candidate mentioning the applicability of quota facility for once.
‘The huge gathering of students proved the appeal of the stance against the disparity regarding the reinstatement of the quota system. The fascist regime could not be able to beat the students’ community since the language movement in 1952 onwards. Simultaneously the incumbent government has to reimpose the circular that was adopted in 2018,” said Zahidul Islam Emon, a student under the academic session 2018-19.
The protesters warned the government for the tougher movement if their demands remain unmet.
