ICT team visits Rangpur for Abu Sayeed murder case

A 12-member delegation of the International Criminal Tribunal (ICT ) team visited the murder place of Shaheed Abu Sayeed, a student of the English department of Rangpur Begum Rokeya University, who was shot dead by police during an anti-discrimination student movement in Rangpur on Monday.
During this time, they heard accounts of the events of that day from eyewitnesses and media personnel and collected evidence of the murder. The International Criminal Tribunal wants to ensure international justice in all murder cases, including Abu Sayeed, not just in name, but in substance, said the organization's prosecutor, Barrister SM Mainul Karim.
He said this while talking to reporters after visiting the area in front of Gate No. 1 of Rangpur Begum Rokeya University, the scene of the murder of Abu Sayeed of the university on Monday morning, January 20.
Barrister SM Mainul Karim said that the allegations in the Abu Sayeed murder case came to the tribunal a week ago. That is why a 12-member team has come to Rangpur to investigate. After completing the investigation as soon as possible, a case will be filed in this incident and an arrest warrant will be issued. During the inspection, a sketch map of the incident will be made, along with the original footage of the scene and eyewitnesses in the VC's conference room and forensic examination will be conducted. He said that after the July Revolution, many complaints have come to the International Crimes Tribunal. That is why we have come to Rangpur. We will listen to those who were at the scene. After the investigation, action will be taken from the International Crimes Tribunal. After completing the investigation as soon as possible, a case will be filed in this incident and an arrest warrant will be issued and the arrest drive will begin.
Responding to a question from reporters whether former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will be charged in this case or not, Prosecutor Barrister Mainul said that whether former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will be charged in this case or not can also be said after the investigation. None of those involved will be exempted. Regarding the status of previous cases including Abu Sayeed if the case is filed in the International Crimes Tribunal, Prosecutor Mainul said, "The International Crimes Tribunal case is a different case. The case filed earlier in the murder of martyr Abu Sayeed will proceed at its own pace. That case will not have any impact on the International Crimes Tribunal case." Begum Rokeya University students Abrar Shamim and Arman Hossain provided detailed information about the incident to the investigators.
Begum Rokeya University VC Dr. Shawkat Ali said, Abu Sayeed is a symbol of the July Movement. We are happy that the Abu Sayeed murder case has gone to the International Crimes Tribunal. Our demand is to ensure the maximum punishment for everyone directly and indirectly involved in this case. After the inspection, Barrister Mainul Karim said, an investigation is underway into the people who were martyred in the anti-discrimination movement in greater Rangpur, including Abu Sayeed. Abu Sayeed's murder has created a stir across the country and even internationally. We are seriously investigating this incident. On the instructions of the Chiabuef Prosecutor, we are conducting an investigation with a 12-member team. Apart from Abu Sayeed, they will collect information and data on the killing of all the martyrs killed in the July movement in Rangpur. They are scheduled to return to Dhaka on Tuesday after a three-day visit.
It is mentioned that during the anti-discrimination movement, Abu Sayeed, a student of the English department of Rangpur Begum Rokeya University, was shot dead by police in front of Gate No. 1 of the university on July 16 last year at 2:17 pm. After this incident, the anti-discrimination student movement gained an additional dimension. Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled on August 5. The police filed a case against the protesters on July 17 in the case of Abu Sayeed's murder. Then Abu Sayeed's elder brother Ramzan Ali filed another case. Police constable Sujan Chandra, Sub-Inspector (SI) Amir Hossain, and former proctor of Rokeya University Shariful Islam were arrested in this case and are currently in jail.
