Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam on Sunday expressed confidence in the Police Bureau of Investigation’s (PBI) ability to solve the long-standing Sagar-Runi murder case.
“Though it is challenging, they have assured us that they are working hard on this,” Alam said.
Speaking at a press briefing at the Foreign Service Academy, he emphasised that the case, which dates back 12-13 years, is now under active investigation by the PBI.
Alam mentioned that discussions with the PBI chief had given him hope that progress would be made in settling the case in a faster way.
“All of us here as journalists are brothers-sisters, and the Sagar-Runi incident is a very tragic chapter in our journalism,” he said.
Alam said they were united in demanding justice and are continuing their efforts, recalling the widespread protests and campaigns led by journalists seeking justice for Sagar-Runi.
He highlighted the ongoing efforts by the PBI, saying that they are working tirelessly to make up for the lost time and solve the case.
The press secretary also pointed out the recent achievements of the PBI, including its breakthrough in solving a case that had remained unsolved for 30 years.
Sagar Sarwar, news editor of Maasranga Television and Meherun Runi, senior reporter of ATN Bangla, were killed in the early hours of February 11, 2012, in a rented house in West Rajabazar of the capital.
Despite several efforts, there has seen little progress over the years and the case remains one of the most high-profile unsolved cases in Bangladesh.
