Heavy rains in Sonagazi damages roads threatening BEZA connecting road, bridge

Sonagazi (Feni) Correspondent

Several roads have collapsed in several unions of the upazila in Sonagazi, Feni, due to continuous heavy rains for several days. This has disrupted traffic movement and road communication.

In addition, houses are at risk of erosion due to rain and river tides. As a result, residents of the riverbanks are living in fear. The rivers have lost their normal course after the Muchapur regulator was destroyed in last year's flood. Due to this, the tide water is entering the locality directly, constantly increasing the damage.

According to relevant sources, erosion has started again on the banks of the Kalidas Pahalia River in Majupur village of Nawabpur in the upazila. The only bridge over the Kalidas Pahalia River from Nawabpur to Kaska in the same union has collapsed by more than 2 feet due to erosion, causing extreme public suffering. All types of traffic have been stopped.

At the same time, due to the severe erosion of the Big Feni River, the road and bridge construction under construction by LGED  from Mirshasharai Economic Zone to Sonagazi at a cost of 8 billion taka is under threat due to erosion in the Feni River (Sonagazi) section. Yesterday, Monday, LGED and BEZA officials inspected the affected areas of the Feni River in the Economic Zone.
It was also seen on the ground that road communication has been blocked due to the collapse of the paved road next to the Badar Mokarram Canal in Banshbazar, Ward No. 1 of Char Darbesh Union. The road in North Char Chandia village of Char Chandia Union has collapsed and fallen into the canal.
Talking to local residents, it is known that several places on the roads of different unions of the upazila have collapsed. This has disrupted traffic and put people in trouble. In addition, in the area adjacent to Saheber Ghat Bridge, the river bank, including cropland, is being eroded by aggressive river erosion in the villages along the banks of the Choto Feni River.

Sonagazi Upazila Engineer Monir Hossain said that the Water Development Board, as well as the LGED, are working on the road collapse in many places in Sonagazi due to river erosion. Repairs have already started to make the roads passable and a list has been sent to the higher authorities of LGED to undertake the necessary repairs.

A decision was taken to immediately dump 6,000 geo bags with LGED funding to prevent erosion in the areas affected by the Feni River erosion.
