Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner SM Sazzat Ali has said that Shah Alam, the former officer-in-charge (OC) of Uttara East Police Station, likely fled to India after escaping police custody.
The commissioner said this while exchanging views with the newly elected executive committee members of the Crime Reporters’ Association of Bangladesh (CRAB) at his office on Tuesday.
“Police arrested the former OC Shah Alam in Kushtia and brought him to the station, but he managed to escape from custody and possibly fled to India,” said the DMP chief.
He said, “The police personnel at the police station showed sympathy towards him, allowing him to remain outside the lockup. As a result, two policemen were temporarily suspended for negligence in duty.”
Mirza Mehedi Tamal, president, and MM Badsha, general secretary of CRAB, along with other committee members, were also present at the meeting.
Shah Alam was arrested in connection with a murder case filed during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement on 8 January. He managed to escape from the police station that same night.
In addition to the suspension of two policemen, the then-serving OC of the station, Mohibullah, was transferred.
