Ex-food minister Qamrul placed on 8-day remand

Court Correspondent

A Dhaka court has granted an 8-day remand for former food minister Qamrul Islam in connection with the murder case of businessman Abdul Wadud in the New Market area during the anti-discrimination movement.

Dhaka Additional Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ziadur Rahman passed the order following a hearing on Tuesday.

Inspector Jahangir Arif, the investigation officer in the case, presented Qamrul before the court in the morning, seeking a 10-day remand. Qamrul’s defence lawyer filed a petition to cancel the remand plea and applied for bail, which the state strongly opposed. Following arguments from both sides, the court rejected the bail plea and approved an 8-day remand.

According to the case details, businessman Abdul Wadud was shot dead on 19 July around 5:00 pm in front of Gate No. 1 of New Market. Following the incident, a murder case was filed against 130 individuals, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader.

The victim's brother-in-law Abdur Rahman filed the case with New Market Police Station on 21 August.
