
DU holds press briefing on initiatives over 6-month : Student politics to be reformed, steps taken for overall dev in all sectors

A press briefing was held on Sunday to inform journalists about the development initiatives, measures, and decisions taken by the authority of Dhaka University over the past six months.
Vice-Chancellor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan, along with Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Admin) Prof Dr. Saima Haque Bidisha, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education) Prof Dr. Mamun Ahmed, Treasurer Prof Dr. M. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, and Proctor Associate Prof Saifuddin Ahmed briefed the journalists
During the briefing, the university administration highlighted various reforms, particularly in response to the July Uprising. Steps have been taken for structural reforms, recognition of injured students, and academic seminars to analyze the events.
A committee has been formed to identify and take disciplinary action against those suspected of misconduct during the movement.
Besides, a six-member medical committee has been formed to oversee the treatment of the injured, who have been honoured with the title "Hero's of Dhaka University."
Regarding student politics, the administration clarified that it will not be banned but to be reformed, and a special committee was formed to provide recommendations on necessary changes. Additionally, steps have been taken to abolish mass rooms (Gonorooms) in student dormitories.
To address the accommodation crisis, several initiatives have been implemented, including the inauguration of the July Martyrs’ Memorial Building with 1,008 seats at Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall.
Moreover, Rabindra Bhavan and Professor Anudvaipayan Bhattacharya Residential Faculty Building have been inaugurated at Jagannath Hall. Discussions with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for the construction of new dormitories have also been successful.
The renovation and repainting of rooms at Sufia Kamal Hall have been completed. At Ziaur Rahman Hall, a new concrete road has been built for cafeteria and mess access, along with improvements in food quality and reopening of the long-closed mess. High-speed internet connectivity has been provided at Kuwait-Maitree Hall, and two additional routers have been installed in the reading room.
To enhance campus security and traffic control, six new entry gates have been installed, and a traffic barrier has been placed in front of the BNCC Building. In collaboration with Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited (BTCL), the university is working to improve WiFi services in residential halls, with three towers and 38 WiFi access points already set up.
For public health and safety, mosquito control programs have been implemented across residential halls and various campus buildings to combat the spread of dengue. Ambulance services have also been introduced for emergency medical assistance.
Several welfare initiatives have been undertaken, including the installation of water filters at Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall and the establishment of a gymnasium for students. A dedicated prayer space for female students has been arranged at TSC.
In terms of healthcare improvements, Shahid Dr. Murtaza Medical Center is being automated to enhance medical services. Modern X-ray machines and air conditioning units have been installed, and discussions are underway regarding the recruitment of new medical professionals.
Furthermore, discussions have been held with Turkish representatives regarding the reconstruction of the Dhaka University Mosque with their assistance.
The university administration reiterated its commitment to enhancing academic standards, improving infrastructure, and ensuring student welfare through these ongoing initiatives.
