Demand for hand-fried 'muri ' not being met : Health risks in machine-fried 'muri 'in Narayanganj

Staff Correspondent, Narayanganj

Workers are busy at a muri factory in Lalpur, Fatullah. 'Muri ' is being rolled out by machines. The muri is being packed in bags next to it. It is being supplied to various places. The holy month of Ramadan is underway.

'Muri 'is the main accompaniment of Iftar. It is the season for muri traders. No matter how innocent the image of machine-fried muri may seem to the naked eye, in reality, machine-fried muri is not at all healthy. Rather, it is harmful. Muri mixed with harmful urea fertilizer and hydros is being made every day in muri factories in several upazilas including Narayanganj Sadar. That muri is being sold in various shops in the city. Fasters are knowingly eating muri.

Meghla Rani, a craftsman who makes muri by hand. He expressed his disappointment and said that traders are using harmful hydros to make machine-fried muri attractive and large in size. And some women muri traders like Meghla of the village are not able to compete with these unscrupulous traders. Therefore, many are forced to switch to other professions. The demand for muri increases several times during the month of Ramadan compared to other months.

He was talking to the artisans of hand-fried muri in Jhaugrah village of Araihazar upazila of Narayanganj. However, the demand for hand-fried muri increases several times during the month of Ramadan. Even after working day and night, the demand cannot be met. Women are now spending their time busy. After finishing the work of frying muri in the morning, some of them leave the village and some of them go back to the city on foot with the muri on their heads.

Kakuli Rani, a muri trader from the same village, said that there is a lot of demand for muri during Ramadan. But due to lack of capital, they are not able to supply muri properly. Minti Roy said that she frys muri since early morning and leaves her house at 6:30 in the morning.

They sell muri in different neighborhoods and neighborhoods of the city and return home. But the women of this village are unable to compete with the lack of capital and unscrupulous traders. Although there is a demand for their handmade, adulterated muri, they are unable to supply it. Some have moved to other professions because they are unable to survive in the business.

Those who fry muri in machines mix hydros to make the muri bigger and whiter and sell it at a lower price. This costs less and is less laborious. So it is difficult to compete with them. Gopal Ghosh said, I fry muri with great difficulty and sell muri on foot. I make a profit of 550 taka by selling muri for three to four days. Each kg of muri is being sold at 70 to 80 taka.

Meanwhile, in the muri factories, unscrupulous traders are mixing harmful hydros in muri. This makes the muri bigger in size and also whiter. The traders said that they are mixing it for business even though they know that it is harmful to the human body. The Dedar Muri factory in Madanpur, Fatullah Port, is mixing harmful urea and hydros in Muri.

A Muri factory owner said that mixing hydros in Muri is harmful to health. But the public is not buying Muri unless it is clean and large in size. That is why hydros are being mixed.

Narayanganj health officials said, they have heard about mixing hydros in Muri. Mixing hydros in Muri makes Muri white and large in size. The news of conducting raids through mobile courts on these factories mixing hydros has already reached the factories. Later, the mobile court people went there and found no evidence, he said.

Now the month of Ramadan is going on. All the fasting people are eating a popular Iftar item of Cholamuri after fasting. But if the type of Muri you are choosing to make this item has a risk of losing life!

We all know that chemicals are mixed in Muri for business purposes. But many of us do not know which type of muri is more harmful to the body. Two types of muri are more common in the market. One is a long, thin muri. The other is a thick, quite swollen muri. Do you know which type of muri is more harmful to the body?

Knowing the answer to this question will make your head spin right away. Many people buy round muri thinking it is a local rice muri. But it is this round muri that is causing the most harm to your body. But you do not know this fact. Experts say that if the muri is made by soaking the rice in water mixed with urea, then the muri swells more.

Traders mix sodium hydro sulfide with more urea to make the muri swell more. This swollen muri is silently destroying the body little by little.

This harm to the body is even more serious because the muri is made white by mixing chemicals. Researchers say that this type of alkali enters the body and destroys the function of hemoglobin in the blood. So try to avoid buying white and excessively swollen muri.
